Warner Bros. Pictures released today the origin movie’s official trailer for the Gotham city’s supervillain, Joker. It proves that DC is becoming darker than ever.
The trailer revolves around the origin story of Joker, as Arthur Fleck. It details how his seemingly uplifted spirit broke into pieces and transformed him as the Clown Prince of Crime.
Different actors have portrayed Joker over the years. Just recently, Jared Leto played the role in the 2016 Suicide Squad Film, but no actor has gone close to Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the villain.
In the less than three minutes trailer, fans and critics are already praising the physco-thriller film. Some are even commenting on Joaquin Phoenix’s promising portrayal of the villain. Robert De Niro is also part of the ensemble as he plays the role of a talk show host who seems influential in building Joker’s character.
Phoenix’s lines ‘my mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face’ and ‘bring laughter and joy to the world’ humanize his character and make him more relatable to the audience.
Foray into Extended Universe Films
In the past, DC has limited its films to origin stories of main superheroes like Superman and Batman. Over the years, it has branched out by creating films on Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and most recently, Shazam!
Since 2016, DCEU has been aggressive in releasing films with seven movies in a span of three years. While Joker does not belong to the DCEU, the success of the film will open another avenue for DC to produce an even darker atmosphere for succeeding films.
In the next two years, five more DC Extended Universe films are set to be released. This includes Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Batman, Suicide Squad, and Aquaman 2.
JOKER will be aired on October 4, 2019, a few weeks before Halloween.
