The right to vote is the basic foundation of democracy. By allowing the citizens to decide who they want as a leader allows them to effect change in society. If you’re an experienced voter, you already know this. But if you’re a first-time voter, choosing the best leader to vote for can become an overwhelming task.
To help you actuate the power of your vote during the pandemic, here are the easy steps to get started:
1. Register
The first thing you need to do is, of course, to register yourself as a legal voter. You must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible to vote in the national elections. Also, you must be a resident of the country for at least half a year to be able to vote.
2. Research Candidates
The next thing you need to do is think about who to vote. To help you narrow down your choices, here are some important questions you need to ask yourself:
- What kind of leader am I looking for?
- What kind of leader does the country need?
- What are the current issues/ problems that the country is currently facing?
And then, research which candidates have a plan action that aligns with your answers to the questions above. Not only that, but you should also learn about the history and experiences of these candidates to know whether they qualify to lead the country or not.
3. Pay attention to campaigns
One way to learn about your prospective candidate is to listen to their campaigns. This is one way to find out their plans for the country and how they intend to execute those plans. Then you can formulate more questions to evaluate further whether you think it’ll work for the country or not. You can use this information to create an educated decision of who to vote.
4. Find your voting precinct
It’ll save you a lot of time knowing where your assigned voting precinct is ahead of time. So if possible, know yours even before the election day. It’s also good to know that voting centers will have long waiting lines. So make sure to only bring essentials with you.
5. Cast your ballot
On election day, you can either vote via the traditional paper or through the electronic voting system. But during this time of the pandemic, they’re likely to make you cast your vote using the electronic system.
Just keep in mind all the things you’ve researched for before this day. It’d be wise to keep a list of your candidates ready beforehand too. This is to ensure you won’t waste a vote just because you forget one person on your list.
You’ve done it!
After you’ve cast in your vote, take a deep breath and step out of the voting precinct with your head held high. You’ve just exercised your power to vote during the pandemic. And not only have you exercised your right as a citizen of a country, but you’ve also made a change in this world, albeit subtle. Remember that even a small pebble can create a tidal wave. So be proud!
