If you are a curly-haired girl, then surely you’ve felt frustrated about your mane requiring high maintenance at least a couple of times. See, naturally wavy and curly hair are known for being unpredictable, inconsistent, and difficult to manage. That is why frizzy hair remains common among people with originally luscious curls. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o is just one of the Hollywood stars who effortlessly rock their natural curly crowns. Her hairstylist Vernon François likes to bring out the best in them instead of opting for the famous straight and silky manes we see on actresses.
Below are 5 of the best curly hair-care tips to learn from Vernon:
Before going into the shower, apply shampoo to your dry hair.
Spot treat areas that need the most cleaning rather than lathering everything in one go. Specifically, these are the drier scalp areas or greasier sections such as the hairline and nape. There should be fewer snags since you have more control in detangling and working your way through your entire head while in the shower.
Retain natural moisture in curly hair by co-washing.
This method means only using conditioner instead of the typical shampoo-then-conditioner method. Vernon François has his own co-wash Shampoo from his hair product line Vernon Francois that is infused with ubuntu, marula, jojoba, and sweet almond oils. The shampoo brings conditioner-levels of moisture to the hair for better shine and elasticity.
When detangling curly hair, your fingers are the best tool.
Be gentle, patient, and start from the ends upwards. This puts less stress on the hair so you lose fewer strands as well.
Avoid overheating the curls when drying the hair with a diffuser.
Vernon uses a “3D” approach to make sure that every part of the hair is diffused and scrunched in different sections. Keep your diffuser at a 45-degree angle so that one half of the diffuser rim is resting against the roots while the other is facing outward. This allows the diffused section to breathe. Also avoid overdrying the curls by alternating between sections, holding the diffuser upon each for only 40-50 seconds. Keep doing so until the entire heard is about 95% dry.
Lastly, keep your curls intact while sleeping with the “pineapple wrap” method.
Twist your hair and secure them with any soft cloth like an old cotton T-shirt. This will keep your curls neat for a long time since you reduce the friction applied to them overnight.
Because of differently shaped hair follicles and a greater tendency for dryness, curls are way harder to tame and maintain than straight hair. However, with a bit more effort and research, you should be able to come close to Beyonce’s or Lupita’s unbelievably gorgeous mane!
