While everyone is confined indoors, gardening has become a way to ease boredom and loneliness. In the Philippines alone, there’s been a surge of plant enthusiasts resulting in a boom in the country’s horticulture industry. Gardening is indeed therapeutic, but it’s not an easy thing to do. Especially if you’re a beginner. So to help you, here are some gardening hacks you need to know.
Water plants at the beginning of the day
The most ideal time water your plants are at the beginning of the day. This allows water to seep down to the roots with minimal dissipation. It also allows water to stay within the plant for the entire day. If not in the morning, late in the evening is the next best thing as it allows water to travel to the entire plant without drying up in the sun.
Have a compost bin ready
Having a compost bin nearby gives you easy access to fertilized soil. All you have to do is dispose of your food leftovers, grass cuttings, and other biodegradable materials into that bin. After a few days, you’ll have fertile soil that your plant baby will love.
Don’t throw eggshells away
Another gardening hack you need to know is the use of eggshells. Eggs aren’t just great for breakfast. The eggshells are great for your green babies too. That’s because the latter is rich in calcium, which helps moderate soil acidity and provides plants the nutrients they need.
But before you even begin to squash the eggshells, make sure to wash it clean first. Then, spread it around the base of your plants. For maximum effect, you’ll need more than just a couple of eggshells. So be sure to collect as many eggshells as you can.
Download a plant application
If you’re a beginner, you’ll surely need a lot of guidance in taking care of your plants. Downloading a plant application will help you learn the basics of horticulture. It will also help you identify the kinds of plants you have, as well as give you specific care instructions.
Make a DIY watering can
This gardening hack is great beginners who don’t have the complete tools yet. You can make your own watering using just a simple can. Simply drill holes at the bottom of the container, and you’re good to go. Fill the container with water and hover it over your plants as the water drops from the holes.
Let the bugs in
While most people think of bugs and insects as problems, some of them are actually good for the plants. And it’s a great gardening hack to know what they are. Specifically, these are the bees and ladybugs. These species of insects help protect the plants and aid in pollination. You can make a shed on the fence to attract the right kinds of bugs.
Clean and sharpen your gardening tools with sand and oil
Sand is great for sharpening your tools while the oil keeps rusting at bay. Make your cleaner and sharpener by filling a pot with sand and mineral oil. All you have to do is dip your tool into the pot after each use, then rub the sand off with a clean cloth.
